Understanding Dust Hazards in Brick Production

What are the risks of brick dust?

Breathing in brick dust can be very dangerous as it can contain silica particles, otherwise known as Respirable crystalline silica (RCS). RCS can cause various respiratory issues, such as silicosis, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Inhaling these particles can also irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and can cause coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Exposure to these particles over time can lead to long-term health problems, including lung scarring and reduced lung capacity. It is important to limit exposure to brick dust through LEV Systems and to wear protective equipment when working with it.

What is silica dust?

Silica dust is airborne particulate matter containing tiny particles of respirable crystalline silica. It is produced when materials containing silica, such as sand, rock, concrete, and other construction materials, are disturbed and become airborne. A brick has up to 30% silica content.
